Weather in Hanoi in April

Vietnam · 20-year averages, April

Shoulder season. April is shoulder season in Hanoi — cheaper, quieter, and a genuine gamble. Highs average 31.5 °C, lows 21.1 °C, and rain falls on 12 days — nothing in the month is working against you.

April ranks 7 of 12 in Hanoi: past the worst of the year but short of December, which is the month to book if the dates are open.

Rain on 12 days, 2 of them heavy. Enough to need a plan B, not enough to need a plan around it. Pack for 31.5 °C days and 21.1 °C nights; the spread matters more here than any single number.

What the averages hide

Averages flatten a month, and this one hides a few things: 6 days clear 35 °C, so a serious heatwave is normal rather than notable. Across the twenty years measured, the hottest April day reached 42.4 °C and the coldest night fell to 11.8 °C, and the wettest single day dropped 51 mm — roughly 65% of the month's rain in one day.

April is statistically steady but not small: the year-to-year variation is modest in relative terms, yet the wettest April on record still delivered 143 mm against 31 mm in the driest. In a month this wet, even a tame spread is a lot of rain in absolute terms — the 78 mm average is a reasonable planning figure, not a promise.

Wind is light at 7.6 km/h, so the temperature on the page is close to the temperature on your skin, and humidity runs at 78%, high enough to notice on the warm days without dominating them.

How April sits in the year

Temperatures hold steady either side: 27.8 °C in March, 31.5 here, 32.7 in May. Nothing about the timing within the month matters much. Rain is the thing that moves: May brings 6 days more of it, so the earlier half of a flexible trip is the safer half.

Daylight in April

12.6 hours of daylight, gaining 0.6 hours across the month. That is between Hanoi's extremes of 13.4 and 10.9 hours, so days are long enough not to constrain the plan.

An inland climate

Despite being inland, the year stays fairly even: 21.2 °C between the year's warmest afternoons and coldest nights.

How busy it gets

Quiet. Few other visitors, cheaper rooms, and a real chance some seasonal operators are shut.

Crowd levels are estimated from climate desirability and school-holiday calendars, not from visitor numbers.

April in Hanoi versus nearby

If Hanoi is one option among several, the nearby comparison is worth making. Haiphong is a better bet in April — 2.8 °C cooler, 2 days less rain. Thanh Hóa is close enough to be a coin toss — within a degree on temperature, 2 days less rain.

So: April is a compromise. December is 34 points better and is what Hanoi is actually like at its best — worth moving the trip for if that is possible, and worth adjusting expectations for if it is not.
