Weather in Mexico City in May

Mexico · 20-year averages, May

A good month. May works. It is not the peak, but nothing about it fights you. You should expect rain on 15 days of the month, which is more days wet than dry.

May ranks 8 of 12 in Mexico City: past the worst of the year but short of December, which is the month to book if the dates are open.

This is persistent light rain rather than storms: 15 wet days but only 0 heavy ones. It rarely cancels anything outright, and it rarely fully clears either. A jacket beats an umbrella. Pack for 28.3 °C days and 12.6 °C nights; the spread matters more here than any single number.

What the averages hide

Averages flatten a month, and this one hides a few things: 10 days top 30 °C — hot spells arrive, but they break; the day swings 15.8 °C from low to high, which means one bag has to cover both. Across the twenty years measured, the hottest May day reached 34.2 °C and the coldest night fell to 6 °C.

May is moderately variable: 20 mm in the driest year against 117 mm in the wettest, around an average of 55 mm. Roughly two Mays in three land near that average, and the third does something else entirely.

Wind is light at 4.2 km/h, so the temperature on the page is close to the temperature on your skin, and humidity is unremarkable at 55%.

How May sits in the year

Temperatures hold steady either side: 28.4 °C in April, 28.3 here, 25.8 in June. Nothing about the timing within the month matters much. Rain is the thing that moves: June brings 8 days more of it, so the earlier half of a flexible trip is the safer half.

Daylight in May

May is at or near the longest days of Mexico City's year: 13 hours of daylight, gaining 0.4 hours across the month. Evenings are the real gain — dinner outdoors still happens in full light.

An inland climate

Despite being inland, the year stays fairly even: 21.8 °C between the year's warmest afternoons and coldest nights. At 2240 m, altitude is doing as much work here as latitude: thinner air means fierce sun by day and heat that leaves the moment it sets. Within May itself the daily swing is 15.8 °C, so mornings and afternoons need different clothes.

How busy it gets

Off season. The genuine off season: cheapest by a distance, with the caveat that some tours and restaurants close entirely.

Crowd levels are estimated from climate desirability and school-holiday calendars, not from visitor numbers.

May in Mexico City versus nearby

If Mexico City is one option among several, the nearby comparison is worth making. Santiago de Querétaro is close enough to be a coin toss — 3.5 °C warmer, 6 days less rain. Morelia is close enough to be a coin toss — 2 °C warmer, 6 days less rain.

So: May is a compromise. December is 28 points better and is what Mexico City is actually like at its best — worth moving the trip for if that is possible, and worth adjusting expectations for if it is not.
