Weather in Sendai in February

Japan · 20-year averages, February

The month to avoid. February is the month most people should skip in Sendai. Highs sit at 2.5 °C and the day is short; this is an indoors-with-excursions month, not an outdoors-all-day one.

February ranks 11 of 12 — near the bottom of Sendai's year. May is the month that works, and the swing between the two is 68 points, which is a different holiday rather than a slightly better one.

This is persistent light rain rather than storms: 18 wet days but only 1 heavy ones. It rarely cancels anything outright, and it rarely fully clears either. A jacket beats an umbrella. Layers, and a genuinely waterproof outer — at 2.5 °C the difference between a good day and a miserable one is entirely down to what you are wearing.

What the averages hide

Averages flatten a month, and this one hides a few things: 25 nights drop below freezing, so anything left outside stays frozen. Across the twenty years measured, the hottest February day reached 18 °C and the coldest night fell to -13.7 °C.

February is one of the reliable ones — rainfall has stayed between 43 mm and 107 mm across all twenty years, a narrow enough band that the 81 mm average is something you can plan against rather than merely quote.

Wind is light at 7.7 km/h, so the temperature on the page is close to the temperature on your skin, and humidity runs at 94%, which at 2.5 °C means damp rather than muggy — the kind of cold that gets into a coat and stays there.

How February sits in the year

Temperatures hold steady either side: 1.7 °C in January, 2.5 here, 7.3 in March. Nothing about the timing within the month matters much. Rain has already shifted: 5 days fewer than January had.

Daylight in February

10.8 hours of daylight, gaining 1.1 hours across the month. That is between Sendai's extremes of 14.8 and 9.5 hours, so days are long enough not to constrain the plan.

Sea temperature

The sea sits at about 10.1 °C in February — too cold to swim without a wetsuit. The sea peaks at 23.9 °C in August and bottoms out at 10 °C — water lags the air by a month or two, which is why the best swimming often comes after the best weather.

How busy it gets

Off season. The genuine off season: cheapest by a distance, with the caveat that some tours and restaurants close entirely.

Crowd levels are estimated from climate desirability and school-holiday calendars, not from visitor numbers.

February in Sendai versus nearby

If Sendai is one option among several, the nearby comparison is worth making. Niigata is a better bet in February — 3.8 °C warmer, 1 day more rain. Utsunomiya is a better bet in February — 5.4 °C warmer, 12 days less rain.

So: February is a compromise. May is 63 points better and is what Sendai is actually like at its best — worth moving the trip for if that is possible, and worth adjusting expectations for if it is not.
