Weather in Vancouver in February

Canada · 20-year averages, February

The month to avoid. Of the twelve, February is the one to avoid. Highs sit at 5.3 °C and the day is short; this is an indoors-with-excursions month, not an outdoors-all-day one.

February ranks 10 of 12 — near the bottom of Vancouver's year. July is the month that works, and the swing between the two is 69 points, which is a different holiday rather than a slightly better one.

This is wet-season rain: 17 wet days and 6 genuinely heavy ones, which in this climate means concentrated downpours rather than all-day grey. The pattern is usually a clear morning and a loud afternoon, so front-load the day and stop fighting the 3pm hour. Layers, and a genuinely waterproof outer — at 5.3 °C the difference between a good day and a miserable one is entirely down to what you are wearing.

What the averages hide

Averages flatten a month, and this one hides a few things: 12 nights fall below freezing; the day barely swings — 5.2 °C between the overnight low and the afternoon high. Across the twenty years measured, the hottest February day reached 14.4 °C and the coldest night fell to -15.8 °C, and the wettest single day dropped 72 mm — roughly 44% of the month's rain in one day.

February is statistically steady but not small: the year-to-year variation is modest in relative terms, yet the wettest February on record still delivered 259 mm against 61 mm in the driest. In a month this wet, even a tame spread is a lot of rain in absolute terms — the 165 mm average is a reasonable planning figure, not a promise.

Wind is light at 3.3 km/h, so the temperature on the page is close to the temperature on your skin, and humidity runs at 92%, which at 5.3 °C means damp rather than muggy — the kind of cold that gets into a coat and stays there.

How February sits in the year

Temperatures hold steady either side: 4.6 °C in January, 5.3 here, 7.1 in March. Nothing about the timing within the month matters much.

Daylight in February

10.1 hours of daylight, gaining 1.7 hours across the month. That is between Vancouver's extremes of 16.2 and 8.2 hours, so days are long enough not to constrain the plan.

An inland climate

Despite being inland, the year stays fairly even: 23.6 °C between the year's warmest afternoons and coldest nights.

How busy it gets

Off season. The genuine off season: cheapest by a distance, with the caveat that some tours and restaurants close entirely.

Crowd levels are estimated from climate desirability and school-holiday calendars, not from visitor numbers.

February in Vancouver versus nearby

If Vancouver is one option among several, the nearby comparison is worth making. Maple Ridge is a better bet in February — within a degree on temperature, the same number of rain days. Nanaimo is a better bet in February — 2.3 °C warmer, 3 days less rain.

So: February is a compromise. July is 66 points better and is what Vancouver is actually like at its best — worth moving the trip for if that is possible, and worth adjusting expectations for if it is not.
